Weblog: Is There Really an SAP Skills Shortage?
Subject: Excellent commentary - training though?

You the hit point dead and center on finding quality SAP resources. As friend of mine said you get to pick two out of three when choosing your resources: good quality, fast, or cheap.

One point you did not bring up is how the training offerings fail to keep pace with the new product offerings at least here in the United States. It seems that the public courses are almost several months behind from the current version. This also seems to be repeated with each new release.

A perfect example is the new CRM 2007 release. Even though it went GA for the United States in March, there are still no traditional courses or training classes available from SAP education geared towards this release. This prevents building a larger pool of people with knowledge on the product and thus causing an "artificial" shortage. That is definitely good for the consulting companies, but bad for customers trying to meet budget constraints. Why can't training be made available on the first day of the release?

Also related, the standard training offerings do not fully cover key topics that ar required for actual implementations. This knowledge must then be learned via actual projects, which further restricts the talent pool. In the cutting edge areas this becomes a major issue in restricting available resource.

Take care,

Stephen
