I have the same experience.
An ABAPer who enters the space is able to comprehend the greatness of CE and integrate applications better than a person who directly gets into CE.
The other thing of the role of a CE developer, he needs to know more about the landscape and make a conscious decision on where to place the functionality and where to place the validations, else the Composite application could cause serious impact on the infrastructure and performance.
