I am a former Java, Lotus Notes, .NET etc. Developer doing mostly ABAP development nowadays. I am also checking out Java development with NWDS and NetWeaver CE besides my usual work. I am really keen on using these new technologies but my initial euphoria soon wore off. I am doing 90% administration instead of Java development. Until now I am still not able to deploy my Web Dynpro Java test applications because there are so much restrictions and dependencies between versions, systems etc. Even the installation is failing very often. Comparing this to Java development with JBoss Seam (which also uses Eclipse IDE and a local JEE server with database connected to it) it is very frustrating to deal with NetWeaver CE. There you simply unpack everything and it works. I would appreciate if there would be a VM from SAP available which simply runs out of the box for test purposes. Then you could start learning on a running system at once and easily show customers what CE is capable of. I already built a working VM using MS Server 2003 but all my work is useless now because I could only use trial versions. Anyway, some day I will get a running system and then I am having a lot of fun developing Java apps for SAP :-)
