I started with SAP sometime last century, working on R/2. I had an eclectic existence prior to that, working on various sized computers of various manufacturers, with various operating systems.... Since my introduction to R/2, I've worked with most releases of R3 and the Netweaver releases and products. My main emphasis and interest has always been around the BASIS / #SAPADMIN / Netweaver Technical Consultant area.

I also have a wide range of non SAP computing experience, from CICS & DB/2 on MVS and Z-OS on the mainframe to CSS, javascript, perl, PHP &tc on the w w w. I'm very lucky in that I get well paid to play with all this technology and software, and I feel equally passionate that I should always provide value in return.

BTW, the easiest way to get me to attempt something is to say it is impossible, or is not allowed....

Where does the value lie in SDN: Tools or Information ?
A major system upgrade, with lots of your time and effort invested in it, lots of people waiting for it... And the go live is postponed at the last minute. My take on the SDN Upgrade delay. Dec. 11, 2011

SAP Security at the Black Hat conference #sapadmin
Hype about Security vulnerabilities is damaging, because it focuses attention on inappropriate areas. However, SAP produces a lot of very complex code, and while they test the products as much as they can, security vulnerabilities do exist in shipped products.  Aug. 5, 2011

#SAPADMIN is more than SAP (Windows Event Viewer)
SAP provides various monitoring and diagnostic tools, but what happens if something prevents SAP from running in the first place ? Every Operating System provides useful ways, completely independent of SAP, of reporting status changes. For example, on Windows systems you can use ..... Mar. 21, 2011

The JAVA equivalents of the SAP* password, some history and a usefull tip.
As the SAP product has matured, 'breaking into' the system has become harder. For example, there's no concept of a 'standard default' for the JAVA equivalents of the SAP* user. How do you get into a system when you have lost the password or locked your user-id ? More importantly, how do you prevent the need for 'breaking into' the system in the first place ? Oct. 14, 2010

BASIS at the Operating System - tp check all
For many developers generally working with SAP, the state of operating system and database are irrelevant - SAP is either working or it's not. For BASIS / Netweaver technicians, it's a bit different. An example of how I solved a problem with a kernel upgrade that wouldn't work because the existing kernel was (slightly) broken. Sep. 29, 2010

The SAP Availability Log
A basic metric for system-wide performance is up time, or system availability. Generally, this is absolute time less scheduled outages. There are many manual and automatic ways of tracking this, but one of the simplest, yet most accurate, for an SAP system is the available.log. Jul. 16, 2009

Run up an SAP system, backed by 150GB of DB2 data, without having to beg, steal or borrow the hardware .... Install SAP on Amazon Web Services #1 – the Environment
In this post, I describe how I setup an Amazon Web Services windows environment to be used for installing SAP ABAP and Java stacks. I show how to: * identify the appropriate starting image, from those provided by Amazon * initiate and modify this environment, * save this environment In a subsequent post, I will describe how to: * setup persistent storage of the NW and DB2 installation, including database logging, * setup an environment suitable for using standard SAP and AWS functionality to support sustained (i.e. 24x7) operation of the SAP system * and finally, be able to (relatively painlessly) stop and start the SAP system and / or server without losss of persistent data. Jun. 22, 2009
