Born just over a month after Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin had become the first person to orbit the Earth, I've always had an interest in technology. However, I've also been aware that if some one is paying me $X to play with these neat (and expensive) toys, I need to provide them at least $X+1 of value in return.

Apart from over 12 years of SAP Technical Consulting, I have a wide range of non SAP computing experience, from CICS & DB/2 on MVS and Z-OS on the mainframe to CSS, javascript, perl, PHP &tc on the w w w. My favourite computing quote is from Larry Wall (perl 'inventor'):
"The three chief virtues of a programmer are: Laziness, Impatience and Hubris."

It's also a rough guide to the way I work ...

  • repetitive stuff is for computers,
  • learn about it as you do it / use it
  • the easiest way to get me to do something is to tell me it's impossible or is not allowed

The SAP Availability Log
A basic metric for system-wide performance is up time, or system availability. Generally, this is absolute time less scheduled outages. There are many manual and automatic ways of tracking this, but one of the simplest, yet most accurate, for an SAP system is the available.log. Jul. 16, 2009

Install SAP on Amazon Web Services #2 – the Installation
Run up an SAP system, backed by 150GB of DB2 data, without having to beg, steal or borrow the hardware .... I have created a public image on Amazon Web Services that can be used as the basis (sorry) for installing an SAP system on Windows. This blog details how to install an IDES system, using this public image and Amazon's EBS feature for persistent data. Jun. 30, 2009

Install SAP on Amazon Web Services #1 – the Environment
In this post, I describe how I setup an Amazon Web Services windows environment to be used for installing SAP ABAP and Java stacks. I show how to: * identify the appropriate starting image, from those provided by Amazon * initiate and modify this environment, * save this environment In a subsequent post, I will describe how to: * setup persistent storage of the NW and DB2 installation, including database logging, * setup an environment suitable for using standard SAP and AWS functionality to support sustained (i.e. 24x7) operation of the SAP system * and finally, be able to (relatively painlessly) stop and start the SAP system and / or server without losss of persistent data. Jun. 22, 2009
