Technical configuration after installation: Spend hours instead of days!!!

The right technical configuration is crucial for robust and manageable systems. In former times this procedure was time and effort consuming for system administrators or consultants. They had to read different tool documentations and the related notes; it took time to get familiar with the summary of user interfaces and the numerous concepts approaches as well as their related dependencies. And after that preparation marathon they felt often like human copy paste machines for redundant entries and spend days for manual integration and consistency checks.

   

Since SAP NetWeaver 7.0 SPS 13 you can use the so called Configuration Wizard after the installation with SAPinst.

The Configuration Wizard

  • is a Java application that is part of SAP NetWeaver Administrator
  • is a uniform and simple configuration tool that accelerates the technical configuration process and makes it less error-prone
  • builds the central access point for technical configuration of selected scenarios
  • consists of tasks required to make the desired features and functions of a system operable

You can start the Configuration Wizard by logging on to SAP NetWeaver Administrator and clicking "Deploy and Change" in the navigation bar. The configuration wizard always operates on the local system in which it is executed. 

   

With the configuration wizard system administrators or consultants can perform configuration tasks in an automated way and thus simplifies the initial setup of their systems. The configuration wizard guides them through the configuration process and offers a uniform user interface for all steps. It enables them to execute configuration tasks across multiple components.

At the moment the configuration wizard provides you templates for:

  • the Basic configuration of Process Integration (PI)
  • configuration of Business Intelligence (BI) Java
  • post installation steps of Development Infrastructure (DI)
  • configuration of the NetWeaver Administrator (NWA)
  • configuration of Mobile Infrastructure (MI)

Your benefits of using the Configuration Wizard are:

  • a reduced number of guides to be and a reduced number of tools to be used
  • the configuration is simplified, accelerated and less error-prone
  • there is no need to check conflicting configuration settings and mutual dependencies between components
  • a reduced time and effort for setup

   

If you compare the setting up of usage type DI with SAP NetWeaver 7.0 SPS 13, you will find the following situation:

 

 Manual Configuration Configuration Wizard
  • Steps from about 70 pages of pure DI configuration and documentation to be prepared and performed
  • Many technologies involved: AS Java configuration, UME concept and administration, configuration of CMS, ....
  • Around 3-5 days  needed for experienced administrator
  • Start template, enter parameters
  • After around 30 minutes runtime, you have set up your first DI landscape

    Hi,


    I also really appreciate the configuration wizard especially for the PI implementation.
    However, I am glad to have this done manually several times during XI 3.0 implementations. This ensures that you really understand what is done in each configuration step. Someone running into an error with configuration wizard will become difficulties with troubleshooting if she/he is doing the configuration the very first time.

      many Thanks for your feedback. Especial this kind of feedback is very welcome and will help us to further improve the Configuration Wizard. As we have currently two versions of Configuration Wizard available (based on SAP NetWeaver 7.0 and 7.1) I would be interested which version you run in this problems? As we have further improved the configuration of version PI 7.1. If you have general advises for improvements please let me know.

    I really appreciate the configuration wizard. It is a big relief. It just took few hours to complete installation when compared with the previous manual instalations and configurations like SLD, system userid creation etc.. Thanks..

      Hi Michael,


      yes, at the moment we are working on this. There have been already many request like this. I am not able to give any concrete timeline, but personally I expect that we will have an offering in the first half of 2009.
