Last week I blogged about the beta release of the SDN homepage for mobile.  Thanks to some good feedback and interest, I went ahead and created mobile versions of the BPX and BusinessObjects Community homepages.

These mobile pages are streamlined versions of the SDN, BPX and BOC homepages that have been created in a single column layout to accommodate quick and easy browsing on a range of smart phones and mobile browsers.

Creating webpages for mobile devices is very different than creating them for computers.  Besides the size variance between devices, each mobile browser has it's own (and often quirky) way of optimizing webpages in the available space. In most cases, the browsers work really well as long as you let them do what they need to do rather than forcing styles on them.  However, the user experience varies device to device and depending on the browser used.

Testing and QA presents another challenge: naturally I've only got 1 phone so I had to track down friends and family with different types of phones to get their feedback before releasing the first mobile page last week.  There are online simulators available but they don't provide a consistent nor fully accurate experience.

While these mobile pages don't replace the homepage, they do provide enough information to keep you up to date with what's going on in the community while on the go.

Each mobile version of the homepage can be accessed individually or from the first level navigation under the community logo and name.  Here are the direct links that can enter on your smart phone:

Hi ! Great idea. I just want to share with you that I've just entered the BPX site from my iPhone OS 3.1.1 and the page rendered very small, it didn't automatically adjusted to the full screen size.

I can send you a screenshot if you like.

    Regards !

    Matias.

Slowly but surely we are starting to appeal to all those business analysts and consultants that are on the job at a client and could benefit from this tremendously.. would be great if we can have a short URL like : bpx.sap.com/mobilebpx in the near future ?
