The long awaited version of Crystal Reports Server 2008 that supports the .Net API and IIS support is finally here.

Not only have we brought back these important features, but we've gone way beyond that with new features such as:

  • Xcelsius dashboarding and Dashboard Builder (for named users only up to 100 named users).
  • Data driven publishing for bursting personalized reports to a dynamic list of recipients
  • Improved Sharepoint portal integration kit
  • New supported platforms such as Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 (for the CMS database).  See the Windows and Linux PAR for more details.
  • Auditing
  • Higher capacity - support for up to 100 concurrent access licenses (CAL) combined with up to 100 named user licenses (NUL).  The old cap was 20 CAL + 100 NUL.
  • Lower prices - 50 and 100 NUL prices are reduced by up to 37%

Crystal Reports Server continues to be available for sale in both Concurrent Access License (CAL) and Named User Licenses (NUL).  Both can be combined up to the maximum of 100 CAL and 100 NUL.

What license should be used for which scenarios?

 CAL

  • For casual reporting users.
  • Includes data-driven publishing.
  • Does not include Xcelsius viewing or Dashboard Builder.
  • Anyone can login to the system up to the number of supported CAL.  Once that limit is reached, subsequent logins are prevented until someone logs out.
  • Ideal for extranet scearios.

NUL

  • For users that require guaranteed access to reports and dashboards.
  • Does not include data-driven publishing.
  • Include Xcelsius viewing and Dashboard Builder.
  • User setup with a NUL license are guaranteed access to the system.
  • Ideal for managers and analysts that must have access to the system.

We expect customers to combine CALs and NULs as needed to meet their needs.

The traditional limitations of Crystal Reports Server remain:

  • No support for multiple servers - its a single server solution.
  • No support for the SAP Integration Kit.  We support reporting off SAP Business One, but not the other SAP applications (All-in-One, and the Business Suite).
  • No support for client tools found in Edge or BusinessObjects Enterprise such as Web Intelligence, Explorer (Polestar), Voyager, Mobile, Universes, Data Integrator, Data Quality, Rapid Marts, or Query-As-A-Web Service.
  • Licenses of Xcelsius Engage (for dashboard design) and Crystal Reports (for report design) are sold separately.

Crystal Reports Server 2008 V1 is available for sale now, and will ship starting September 15.

  • Sample Audit reports are based on a Universe

Audit reports (even the CR-versions)in BOE are based on a "Universe_Query" that sits on-top of the AUDIT database.

Since Universes are NOT supported as a data-source on CR SERVER - are there new sample Audit reports that go directly against the AUDIT database without using the "Universe_Query"...?

Is it possible to get the files downloaded, or do we have to ask for a CD to be delivered?

In the trial download page, after you fill in the form, there are instructions for how to request physical media for an evaluation.
  • Can CRS2008V1 enable Auditing?
2009-09-20 19:10:17 Kong Chong Shun Business Card [Reply]

    Hi,

I have downloaded CRS2008V1 for testing,
but I found that, the auditing function is always disable.
In installation, Audit DB option is grey.
Do you know how to enable it?

and I also found one interesting thing,
I think the CRS core is borrowed from BOE or it have been rebuilt completely compare with V0?
I can install SAP integration Kit on it.
But I don't know it is allowed in license,
at least, it can connect to SAP R/3 successfully.

    Best Regrads,
    John

      Hi,

During installation, you need to enter the auditing database information when you setup the CMS database info/userid/password. If you bypass this step during installation, you can go back to the Server Intelligence Agent and set it up.

This is documented in chapter 12 of the BOE XI 3.1 Administration guide covering auditing setup and configuration.

CR Server 2008 V1 is based on the BOE XI 3.1 core. CR Server in general is a subset of BOE.

The SAP Integration Kit is not supported on CR Server.

CR Server is documented with a combination of CR Server and BusinessObjects Enterprise guides. In the CR Server 2008 V1 Getting Started Guide on help.sap.com we document the CR Server and BusinessObjects Enterprise guides that make up the documentation set. Please refer to the section called 'Crystal Reports Server 2008 V1 components'.

Thanks - Great info about the latest release. Does this latest iteration make Universes available as a semantic layer, or still using Business Views? Any recent plans on consolidating the two?

Also, does Xcelsius in the new CR Server use only a Crystal Report as a data source, or does it use Live Office?

(Sorry - wasn't sure where to post this in the forums.)

      Hi,

      Great questions.

The semantic layer consolidation is under construction right now. Its a little early to comment on timelines or features, but the core concept will allow for Business Views to run side by side with the next generation of Universes to enable migration.

CR Server includes XCelsius viewing rights. No Xcelsius designers are included. You can use any Xcelsius design tool (Engage, Engage Server, or Enterprise) to author your models for use with CR Server. Live Office as a data source is only supported in XCelsius Enterpise at this time, however we're working to make this functionality available in the other versions of Xcelsius in the near future.

Today, Xcelsius Engage supports primarily SOAP based web services for data access. When the model is embedded in a Crystal Report it can access the report data as well, but we don't recommend that model as a dashboarding substitute.

Additionally, Engage Server includes SQL-based connectivity to ODBC and OLEDB enabled data sources, as well as Adobe LiveCycle and Microsoft Reporting Services RDL documents.

      Thanks, Blair
