A new feature for the SOAP Adapter has been introduced with SAP Enhancement Package 1 for NetWeaver PI 7.1(SAP NetWeaver PI 7.1 EHP1 for short). This new feature allows us to set up the XI 3.0 protocol communication between SOAP Adapter in Advanced Adapter Engine(AAE) and ABAP based backend system.

With this enhancement, AAE local processing now supports XI protocol based communication and improves the performance overall.

Also you can apply SAP Note 1334174 to ABAP based application server so that it can send XI protocol based messages to both central Integration Engine and Java based SOAP Adapter.

A detail article of the step-by-step guide, as well as the benefits and limitations of using SOAP Adapter with XI 3.0 protocol in NetWeaver PI 7.1 EPH1 is available from: How To: Set Up the Communication between ABAP Backend and SOAP Adapter using XI Protocol

No direct communication was supported between proxies in ABAP backend systems and AAE up to SAP NetWever PI7.1

From SAP NetWever PI7.1 EHP1, ABAP backend can communicate with AAE directly with XI3.0 protocol.
