SAP Records Management (RM) is a content integration solution for managing the content spread across varied systems & provides process management capabilities to manage business processes. It is shipped in Netweaver stack & is separately licensed.

Typically, today, the enterprises have many systems & any business process touches several systems. To search & work with this content requires the users to manage several systems at a time. Hence, there is a need to integrate content across the enterprise & manage it centrally. Content integration helps in cutting down this redundant management. What you can instead do is have one content integration solution which can connect & handle data across the applications. So that when you come to this solution you will find all the content relevant for a business process grouped together in single view. The content persistence is not affected. The content still resides in the originating applications.

SAP RM is also used across several Business Suite applications for content management in structure manner. For example, CRM case management is based on Case managing capabilities of SAP Records Management. The personnel record in HCM & Grant record in Grant Management is based on the Record capabilities of SAP RM.

SAP RM is, of course, useful if you already working in SAP landscape & want to manage content across the enterprise. For managing disparate systems, the connecting to SAP RM can be setup with small development effort. The product is certified for DOMEA, TNA & DoD 5015.2 v2. The DoD 5015.2 v3 certification is underway.
