Gartner recently released its reports covering corporate performance management suites and core financial management applications - and SAP is positioned in the top categories in both reports.

Before diving in, keep in mind that Gartner uses two different types of reports to evaluate vendors. A comprehensive description is available here; but to summarize:

  • MarketScopes are used for emerging and for mature markets.
  • The Magic Quadrant uses more extensive criteria to evaluate markets in the middle of their life cycle.

SAP BusinessObjects a Leader in Gartner's CPM Magic Quadrant

"SAP (Business Objects) now has a broad portfolio of applications through acquisition, and its overall vision is very strong. The key strategic components of SAP Strategy Management, SAP Business Planning and Consolidation, Business Objects Profitability and Cost Management, and Business Objects Financial Consolidation deliver a good breadth and depth of functionality in all areas of CPM."

SAP ERP Financials Ranks a Strong Positive in the Gartner MarketScope

"SAP's core financial applications have been developed over many years, and although they are part of SAP ERP 6.0 suite, they are the most widely deployed modules in SAP's product set and can be used on a stand-alone basis."

it's an interesting reading and i'm happy that it can be shared with the rest of the SDN community. i have found this piece relevant as well. i hope that i'm not breaking any ip laws and i'm sharing this for the benefit of the whole community.
imho, this is the $14b question most relevant for the whole it industry, but mq's have had their own issues in the past, partiality being one of the most acute problems.
