This is a name of a book. I bumped into this one few days back and believe me, it will change the way you see future of computation.
So what the heck is singularity? Am copying few things here veratim from this book
The Singularity is an era in which our intelligence will become increasingly nonbiological and trillions of times more powerful than it is today---the dawning of a new civilization that will enable us to transcend our biological limitations and amplify our creativity.
An analysis of the history of technology shows that technological change is exponential, contrary to the common-sense "intuitive linear" view. So we won't experience 100 years of progress in the 21st century -- it will be more like 20,000 years of progress (at today's rate). The "returns," such as chip speed and cost-effectiveness, also increase exponentially. There's even exponential growth in the rate of exponential growth. Within a few decades, machine intelligence will surpass human intelligence, leading to The Singularity -- technological change so rapid and profound it represents a rupture in the fabric of human history. The implications include the merger of biological and nonbiological intelligence, immortal software-based humans, and ultra-high levels of intelligence that expand outward in the universe at the speed of light.
Few really interesting things I found in this book are:
1. When you copy a bit from one place to another in memory, no energy(enery as energy in Physics) is released. But when you delete that bit, some ebergy is released.
2. You can compute things from the spin of electrons.
3. A rock, if used wisely(i.e technically well), can work better than a human brain.
